Fall 2011 Reflection
My freshman year here at Bethany College has been one that I will never forget. I have made so many great friends and have countless memories. The beginning of the year was a transition from living with my family and always having their comforting presence in my life to moving 500 miles away to a campus full of strangers. I was lucky enough to be part of the volleyball team, so I made friends before classes started.
Throughout the fall semester, I was in a freshman seminar group. This is where I made most of my best friends. The people in this group were the people that were in my Honors Class. My Honors Class was a lot of fun this semester. The main subject, human nature, was very interesting to study. In fact, this class helped me get to know myself better than I did. I learned a lot about myself and the world from my classmates and teachers.
Similarly, in my other classes I gained a lot of knowledge. My Calculus, Chemistry and Art classes were a lot of fun for me because they challenged me to think at a deeper level and to grasp new concepts. That is one thing about college that I really enjoy - being intellectually challenged. If I am presented with a puzzle or an obstacle, I will try my hardest to overcome it. Perseverance is one of the many important lessons that my freshman year at Bethany has taught me.
Living away from your family and friends also changes who you are. College really defines who you are and who you become. We all change over the years, but I think that college is the most testing time of our lives because everyone is still trying to figure out who they want to become. My science teacher in high school spoke at our graduation ceremony. She told us, "Wherever you go, your standards go with you. Don't ever forget that". This quote has stuck with me ever since. Wherever I go, my values go with me. I should not have to change who I am or how I act. People should just accept others for who they are. It amazes me how much people change to conform to society. I think that we would all be better off just being ourselves. People should not change themselves unless they have good reason to. I have seen far too many people change themselves in college, and not always for the best reasons. People come in and out of our lives. This is another thing that college has taught me. Our friends will move away or change and the most that we can do is to try our best to be nice and friendly to them. Everything happens for a reason.
This fall in college, I have been able to experience some great things. I have played in my first college volleyball game. I have been able to go to my first ever football game (my high school did not have a football team). I have also had the pleasure of getting to meet and becoming friends with people from all around the world. This has enriched my life and made me a better and happier person. All in all this fall semester at Bethany College has been unforgettable.
